Uterine Leiomyoma in Relation to Insulin like Growth Factor-1

چکیده
Background: Uterine leiomyoma is a very common benign smooth muscle tumor of the uterus. It isthe most frequent benign neoplasm in women of reproductive age and could have a harmful impact on the reproductive system. Insulin-like growth factor–I (IGF-I) plays a vital role in the pathogenesis of fibroids. Aim: To find out the relationship of uterine leiomyoma with insulin like growth factor -1. Study design: Cross sectional study Methods: A Cross Sectional study for duration of 6 months (May 2013Nov 2013) was designed. 50 women with uterine fibroids (confirmed by USG) with age range of 25-50 years with confirmed report of fibroid USG, were included in the study. A group of 50 women with no history of disease were taken as controls. Level of plasma IGF-1 was measured by ELISA. Results: About 44% cases and 11% controls had irregular menstrual cycle. An average of two fibroids was noted. About 54% women have small size fibroid (<2cm) and 46% have large size fibroid. Intramural fibroid was observed in 78% and subserosal in 22%. Level of plasma IGF-1 was significantly increased in patients as compared to controls. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a direct relationship of uterine leiomyomata with IGF-1. However, more research is needed to find out the association of IGF-1with the onset of myoma and its growth.

Review: The Role of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 Signaling Pathways in Uterine Leiomyoma.
A growing body of evidence suggests the association of the IGF-I bio-regulatory system with leiomyoma occurrence and growth. The complex interplay between IGF-I/IGF-IR and hormonal and other growth factors is, thus, now receiving significant attention. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms driving the disease may allow for development of novel targeted-therapeutic strategies for the treatment...
متن کاملSex steroidal regulation of uterine leiomyoma growth and apoptosis.
Uterine leiomyomas develop during the reproductive years and regress after menopause, indicating ovarian steroid-dependent growth potential. Although the clinical and biochemical observations have traditionally supported an important role for estrogen in the promotion of leiomyoma growth, there is also increasing evidence to suggest the involvement of progesterone in the pathogenesis of leiomyo...

OBJECTIVES To investigate the roles of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF2), myeloperoxidase (MPO), E-cadherin (CDH1), urokinase and xeroderma pigmentosum group A and D (XPA, XPD) polymorphisms upon leiomyoma susceptibility. STUDY DESIGN Women were divided into: group 1, leiomyoma (n=158); group 2, non-leiomyoma (n=156). Polymorphisms (IGF2 exon 9*A/G, MPO-463*A/G, CDH1-Pml I, urokinase-ApaL,...
متن کاملProgesterone down-regulates insulin-like growth factor-I expression in cultured human uterine leiomyoma cells.
BACKGROUND Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) plays crucial roles in uterine leiomyoma cell growth through stimulating proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. The present study was conducted to elucidate whether progesterone affects IGF-I and its receptor expression in cultured leiomyoma cells. METHODS Isolated leiomyoma cells were subcultured in Phenol Red-free Dulbecco's modified Eagle's ...
متن کاملAnthropometric Measures and the Risk of Developing leiomyoma in Ghana
Background: The etiology of uterine leiomyoma (or fibroids) is poorly understood. Sex steroid hormones, genetic, and growth factors have been hypothesized to play a role in their development, and anthropometric characteristics may influence uterine leiomyoma risk through these sex steroid hormones. Methods: We analyzed retrospectively-collected data from two hundred (200) patients diagnosed as ...
